This is a Christmas commission I've almost finished and I was tempted to call it "15 Years and Counting"; but this lovely old cat has just had it's peace and quiet abruptly overturned by a very large retriever puppy and that I thought made a better title.

This painting is slightly out of focus even though I did use a tripod and the color is a bit stronger but it is pretty close. I have been shooting without a flash and using the zoom so that is probably knocking it out of kilter. Six attempts and I settled for the best of the lot. I'm not a big fan of still life painting; but, if you paint a daily before noon, your lunch is right in front of you.

I made the mistake of not doing a painting each day after a disappointingly light turn out at my studio for the Longmont Studio Tour. I busied myself with some volunteer work and just groused around until I realized I missed the brain activity of painting everyday.
I chose this small pumpkin and onion set because I loved how the colors look against the pink cloth; the reflected lights and shadows were especially fun to catch.

Rockies in June

This was painted from a photo taken on my daughter's birthday trip. It's the smallest painting with this much detail I have ever attempted. I have only done one other majestic mountain view before and it was for the set of Molly Brown at the Longmont Theatre Company. I remember it being about 16' high by 12' long, and I had to do one on either side of the stage. I resorted to using rollers with very long extension poles; the paint trays were on the floor, I was 9' up a 15' ladder swinging the extension poles up and down for days, what a person gets talked into just to "do that art.thing".

Walking Nude Study 2

18" x 24" gray pastels

This study brings the figure forward until it almost invades the viewer's space. By darking the shading, intensifying the line work with stronger strokes, and eliminating the head, leaving just the torso, the fourth figure is suddenly aggressive.

Walking Nude Study

18" x 24" Gray pastel

This is a drawing using gray hard pastels combining four 10 minutes poses. Although overlapping and seemingly translucent, the three left figures come forward by darkening and increasing their size until the third figure's head is off the paper. The fourth figure leaves the group not only because she is turned away but she is on a different plain and her overlapping leg is solid, but the third figure still appears to be forward and crossing behind the fourth because the fourth figure's head and left arm are only suggested. So spacial ambiguity can be such a blast.

One Dancer Five Movements

This study was painted using violet, green, blue and burnt umber. When using any painting medium, I always mix violets and greens. Lately I have been using pastels and have been giving serious thought to adding green and violet to my painting palette, easier thought about than done. What choices ...I don't trust color chits and the cost of the tubes puts me off experimenting.,,,wish they would sell dabs of this and a pinch of that.
